This essay is a condensation of a much longer piece about compassion that was composed during my Clinical Pastoral Education in Fall 2011. It captures some of my conviction that compassion is a physical experience, anchored in the body, and not an abstract virtue. That longer piece is part of a chapter in my manuscript for “Wrestling with Angels: A Father Becomes a Chaplain.”
